Meet the Experts: Iron Smelting

Katherine Muller, along with William Urban and Dan Waddell from Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will join the National Museum of Industrial History for an iron smelting demonstration based on methods learned from Lee Sauder and Darrell Markewitz.

She will build a bloomery furnace, smelt iron, and work the iron out front of the museum.  A tent for shade and benches will be provided for attendees.

7-8 am – furnace heating
10am – ore furnace charging begins
10am-2pm – ore charging
3pm – begin burn down of charcoal
4pm – extract bloom from furnace
5pm – consolidate bloom
6:30 – celebrate successful smelt

People are welcome to come see the furnace being built on August 12th as well as come and go the day of the smelt on August 19th.  If the furnace survives intact there may be an additional smelt on Sunday, August 20th.

The Meet the Expert series takes place on the third Saturday of each month. This unique opportunity to hear thematic talks from experts in their respective fields will include a 45-minute lecture and 15-minute Q&A. Meet the Experts is included in your admission price and is free to all members of the museum.
